When I read spiritual texts at times I come across passages where the “World” is condemened. It’s described as a place that tempts man to do evil acts. It makes me think if the World is an inherently evil place or does it mean to say something else. Perhaps what is evil is excessive materialism that takes us away from Godly values.

Imam Ali (‘a) clarifies this confusion when he sees a man condemning this world. In this comic I’ve been able to capture only an excerpt of the narration. The full narration can be read from Nahjul Balagah, which is a collection of his sermons & sayings.

Sufi Comics: How to pray to God

I often find it difficult to concentrate during prayers. The mind wanders about from one thought to another, and then I complain “why doesn’t God answer my prayers?”. Perhaps the problem is not with God not answering, but the way I’m asking.

During prayer, instead thinking that God is somewhere high up in the sky, we should pray by whispering softly to Him knowing that He is very close to us and loves to hear our Prayers.

Sufi Comics: No Problem!

It is often said that there are great healing powers in the Names of God. But the effect of healing comes from active participation with the meaning of these names and not just mindless recitation. Reminds me of a Sufi Story I recently came across:

Past the worshipper as he prayed came 3 people. The crippled, the beggar and the beaten. Seeing them he cried, “Great God, how is it that a loving creator can see such things and yet do nothing about them?” And God said, “I did do something. I made you.”

Sufi Comics: The Meaning of Love

Sometimes our Love and Faith in God is like in the Anecdote above. We say we love Him and have full faith, but at the same time we’re so easily distracted from this Love & Faith! Reminds me of this verse in the Quran:

Your Lord is He Who speeds the ships for you in the sea that you may seek of His grace; surely He is ever Merciful to you. And when distress afflicts you in the sea, away go those whom you call on except He; but when He brings you safe to the land, you turn aside; and man is ever ungrateful. (Quran 17:66-67)

Sufi Comics How far is Heaven?

The word Nafs cannot easily be translated to English. Depending on the context it can mean different. This Wikipedia article explains further about “Nafs”

Other than the obvious meaning this anecdote has, there is a more subtle meaning that heaven can also be experienced in this world, here & now.

If the experience of heaven is defined as the state of highest pleasure. Once we are able to overcome our individual Ego(s), and remove the veil between us and God, we will begin to experience the Oneness with God. There is nothing more pleasurable than this state. The description of heaven is pale in comparison to this.

Sufi Comics Food for Thought

I love this saying because it’s deep and many meanings can be derived from it. One of them is that of Humility. Man has a tendancy to become proud of himself. He begins to think all that he’s achieved is because of his own doing. This pride blinds him from his own weakness and he forgets that all his abilities & creativity has originated from the Creator.

As we contemplate on our humble beginning and towards our end, we will find humility arising inside us, and we’ll naturally start giving credit to the One who created us.

Sufi Comics: Mother

During pre-Islamic Arabia, the Arabs were so ashamed of having daughters, that they would bury their new born daughters alive. The above is an example of how the Prophet of Islam changed the attitudes of the people during that time & emphasized the importance of the role of women in society.

One would have thought that after centuries of progress mankind would have matured enough to realise the role that the women plays is critical for a healthy society. Yet in many places around the world, the role of the women is still seen as inferior. This has resulted in an alarming rate of female fetuses being aborted. We need to introspect our attitudes and culture, because a society that does not value their women, will always be limited in their growth.
