Sufi Comics: Is the World an Evil place?

When I read spiritual texts at times I come across passages where the “World” is condemened. It’s described as a place that tempts man to do evil acts. It makes me think if the World is an inherently evil place or does it mean to say something else. Perhaps what is evil is excessive materialism that takes us away from Godly values.

Imam Ali (‘a) clarifies this confusion when he sees a man condemning this world. In this comic I’ve been able to capture only an excerpt of the narration. The full narration can be read from Nahjul Balagah, which is a collection of his sermons & sayings.

  1. Hi Ali,

I don’t follow the sentence “You may be deceived by the world… but the world doesn’t deceive anyone” … can you please elaborate a bit?

    Thanks!

  2. Hi Swaroop,

How are you doing? :) What I understood is that the World is not inherently deceptive, but is a mirror of ourselves. Whatever we find good or bad in the world is a projection of our internal state & how we interpret the circumstances. For example, an event that takes place may be good for one person, but bad for another, even though the facts of the event are the same for both.

    take care,

  3. Hi Ali,

I have more good days than bad days lately, all thanks to running, so I guess life is good :)

Thanks for the explaining, it reinforces that it is “all in the mind” and which is exactly why it is so hard :)

    Regards,
    Swaroop
